I am a pretty big Testament fan, although it is mostly due to the cd's Low, Demonic and The Gathering.  The early days were good, especially The New Order (INTO THE PIT!!!!) but they seem pretty repetitive.  Same basic metal drum pattern with gritty riffs overtop.  But those other 3 cd's are damn good.  It's pretty interesting to hear the evolution of the band over the years.  Chuck Billy went from thrashy vocals to death-like vocals.  The music went from standard thrash metal to more detailed and varied death metal culminating with 1999' The Gathering.  That cd is one of the best metal cd's I have ever heard.  Granted there is a lot I have yet to hear, so there may be others that could dethrone this one.  But in the meantime The Gathering continues to kick my ass left and right everytime I throw it in the player.

So, in celebration of the band and their accomplishments I will go on a Testament binge and listen to all the cd's I have today.  Already listened to Demonic.  Currently listening to The New Order.  Next up is The Ritual.

Long Live Metal!!

My only thing is I wish Chuck still sang the way he did. You know minus the death growls. I'm not saying the The Gathering is bad by no means. It is actually a great album from start to finish. But I love his vocals on The Legacy - The Ritual!!!

I don't care to much for Low or Demonic either. They really didn't strick a chord like the other albums did.

I also liked the old school vocals. Obviously much thrashier than his more recent work.

I don't know, would you even consider Testament a thrash band anymore?

That's funny, I have almost the exact opposite opinion.  For me, Demonic and Low suck.  Demonic seems to be a weak attempt at death metal, and Gene Hoglan's terrific drumming skills are vastly underused.  Judging from that album, I wouldn't know how good he actually is.  As for Low, the only songs I thought were truly great were "Hail Mary" and "Dog Faced Gods".  Luckily they went back to a more thrashy feel for the Gathering, definitely their best since the early days.  Even so, I can't completely get behind that album.  This time around you have another legendary metal musician being underused...Steve DiGorgio.  It somehow bothers me to know that he is playing on the cd, but not be able to hear his insane fretless bass rumbling along and popping above the riffs like it did on Death's Individual Thought Patterns.

For me, the first few Testament albums are classic.  The Legacy is probably my favorite, The New Order is a thrash classic, and Practice What You Preach is terrific as well.  I really don't like Souls of Black though, it seems poorly written.  I actually did read somewhere that Souls of Black was thrown together in a hurry so that Testament would have an album to support the Thrash of the Titans tour.  It really shows.  The Ritual is ok, but the production is flat and I would have liked to hear a faster tempo on at least a couple songs.

I am pretty optimistic for the next Testament cd.  Hopefully it will destroy, especially with Skolnick back in the band!  Chuck's death vocals are very strong along with his traditional thrash style.

Also, I highly recommend the new DVD, "Live in London".  Great setlist and fantastic performance.

Amazing band. I enjoy everything they've released, and i'd probably go as far as to say they're in my top 10 band's of all time. The Ritual & The Legacy = Masterpieces.
