A few of my favs that got me to buy them before listening:

I got the Entombed one before I even knew about metal. I was 10 and I bought it because I had a big comic book collection and there were full page ads for that album in a bunch of my Marvel comics.

Other albums would be:
Cannibal Corpse (pretty much anything, but Butchered at Birth is the one that really got me)
Mortician (again, pretty much anything, but Chainsaw Dismemberment was the first one I saw)
Pantera - Great Southern Trendkill (first Pantera album I ever bought and I had never really heard them before)
Coal Chamber - self-titled
Rumpelstiltskin Grinder - Buried in the Front Yard
Sepultura - Chaos A.D.

Cover art is basically how I got into metal. I bought Iron Maiden's No Prayer for the Dying (on tape!) just because of the cool artwork. I never turned back.

While I was already familiar with MF by the time I got DBTO, I have heard countless stories about people buying that album because of the cover.
But I will never forget the experience I had when I first listened to it.
Then when I got it on cassette, holy shit. It sounded even darker than before

I know this isn't the only one I've bought solely for the cover, but it's the only one I can think of right now. :D I remember seeing the cover and being totally amazed by it when I was working in a CD store at 16, so eventually I just bought it (this was obviously before I started listening to MF or KD).

Oddly enough, I purchased GNR's Appetite For Destruction in 1987, soley from the album artwork... Remember, it was released in 1987, but a whole year after it had only sold 500,000 copies... So, I had the album very early on, before they broke through... Pretty lame, but cool as well... (not an awesome cover, but I did buy it soley for the cover... lol)

Yeah, the spelling is right

Tad Morose's Modus Vivendi. Saw it in the store and really loved the cover art. I still listen to the album from time to time, and it's probably my favorite modern power metal album (it's really heavy as hell, and has a very strong Savatage influence). And Melechesh's Sphynx. I saw it at that same store, and thought it looked pretty interesting. The black metal logo, mixed with an Eastern cover art could be decent music. I also saw it was released by Osmose and The End, so I decided to buy it. It's now one of my favorite albums.

The only one I can think of was Savatage's Hall of the Mountain King. I liked the cover art but also the title caught my attention. I really like Peer Gynt from Edvard Grieg (sp?) and the thought of a metal band incorporating that theme into their music intrigued me.

Has anyone brought a cd just because they were so impressed with the cover?

If so,what was it & was it any good?
