Although by todays standards they may seem out dated, they are still the forefathers of this glorious form of music. Other bands that forged the way for doom are Candlemass, Trouble and Witchfinder General. Once I discovered Trouble and their sabbath like riffs I was hooked. Even though I didn't dig their lyrics, their music more than made up for it. I still listen to "Psalm 9" and "The Skull" today. Classic albums that stand the test of time. Another classic album is Candlemass "Epicus Doomicus Metallicus". I would consider these 3 albums must haves to any doom metal fan. Another must have that is a bit more modern is Catherdral's "Forest Of Equilibrium". Pure beautiful sorrow. Some newer bands that get my goat going would be the almighty My Dying Bride, even though not really "new", still heavy as balls! Others include Daylight Dies, Swallow The Sun, High On Fire, Mourning Beloveth, and The Sword. I hope this helps you in your search for one of the most powerful forms of music today. I love Green Carnation (one of my favorite bands actually), Candlemass, Opeth, Amorphis, Anathema, My Dying Bride, Grey Skies Fallen and some other doom and doom influenced bands. But for the genre as a whole, it never really appealed to me too much. Some of it can just sound so dark and sinister but a lot of it just puts me to sleep.

RE: Damn still no Doom Metal threads!

Don't forget funeral doom, as that shit is perfect for cold winters and lightless days. Locking everything out of mind and just listening to bands like Shape of Despair (and their huge, slow guitar barriers) is always an emotional experience.

As for the genre in general, it's one of those things that are hard to master, as there's a really thin line between hypnotizing and boring. Guess it all goes down to those small details that really make the longer songs work. Plus it seems to be one of the most intimate styles out there, so it's no wonder why some stuff just doesn't work for all people.

RE: Damn still no Doom Metal threads!

that new band I reviewed, and Interviwed.
