Have not been in here for a while. Decided to see what is going on in here. I am off to see a few Maiden show's this week. I leave tomorrow for Ozzfest in Tinley Park, IL, then off to Toronto for the week and seeing a Maiden do a full gig. When I come back, I leave again for Ozzfest in East Troy. I'll post review's; and pics (if I don't have any trouble).

This is kind of a long review of Ozzfest on July 24 in Virginia. I originally posted this at www.mikeportnoy.com, where I usually hang out.

Wow, what a helluva ride that was. So many cool things about the festival. I’m sure I won’t be able to remember all of them, but I’ll try.
Got there at about 8:30 cause that is when I thought gates would open. According to the Nissan Pavilion web site Arch Enemy was first and was supposed to start at 9:20. OK, first things first – why the HELL was Arch Enemy on first??? Horrible move, IMO. Anyway, the show started early, pretty much right at 9 when the gates opened, so my buddy and I missed a song and a half of Arch Enemy’s set. We got to the stage in the middle of Dead Eyes See No Future. I’ll tell you this, Angela Gassow (sp?) is one HOT chick and totally metal. Incredible performance. I forget what they played next, but they ended with We Will Rise. Gus G was filling in for Mike Amott and did very well. The guy is an amazing player so that doesn’t surprise me at all. Next came Trivium. Very impresses with their performance. What a ride for these young guys. They shot up right out of the blue and now are on Ozzfest. Sweet. After them was The Black Dahlia Murder and The Haunted. Not really knowing much about them and realizing that both Arch Enemy and Trivium were at the autograph booth we decided to head over there. To get to Arch Enemy you needed to buy a cd. I had no money but my buddy bought an EP for $10 and got in line. I gave him my ticket for the band to sign, too. When my buddy got to the table he got all sig’s for both of us and gave Angela a hug. He told me that he was shaking the whole time and Angela did not let go of the hug, he did. This whole AE story is funnier when you consider that my buddy is 42 and has a huge crush on her. Anyway, after we got the autographs we walked over to where Trivium was. I got the lead singer and guitarist to sign the schedule sheet. My buddy got the drummer’s autograph, too and talked to him for a few minutes.
So next, before we headed back to the stage we walked around for a few more minutes and ended up in a far corner near where some of the trailers were and where the bands were coming from to get to the autograph booth. And right in that corner was a small tent with 2 security guards. One of them starting talking to me about Black Sabbath and Ozzy, and the schedule in general. Well, we ended up chatting with these 2 guys for about 20 minutes and they gave me and my buddy a bottle of water and a Monster energy drink free. They were intended for band members before and after the signing period but nobody was picking them up. Cool, more for us.

The next several bands were kind of a blur. I remember Soilwork was fantastic (they played Blind Eye Halo, As We Speak, and Follow the Hollow, and a couple others), as was Mastadon, A Dozen Furies and Killswitch Engage. Gizmachi should have stayed home, they sucked, as did It Dies Today and Bury Your Dead. After Bury Your Dead came Jada Pinket Smith and her band Wicked Wisdom. As Bury Your Dead was playing their last tune Jada and hubby Will Smith came on stage and sang a chorus or 2 with the band. Pretty cool seeing Will Smith getting jiggy with it and singing a metal tune. I can’t remember what I was doing while Wicked Wisdom was on but they didn’t sound too bad from wherever the hell I was. After them was Gizmachi and like I said before, they were bad. Real bad. The last 2 bands were Killswitch and Rob Zombie and, not being much of a Zombie fan we decided to grab a bite to eat before heading over to the pavilion and main stage.
In Flames opened up the second set to a very small, and not very vocal crowd. They played a short set to little fanfare. I felt kind of bad for them but there was nothing I could do. The only 2 songs I remember them playing was a Touch of Red and In Search for I. Next came Black Label Society. I think they played more than one song but they all sounded the same. It’s a shame because Zakk is one helluva player. Would have like to have heard it better.
Then came Shadow’s Fall. Of all the bands thus far they put on the best performance. The drummer is unreal. Very impressed with that band in a live setting. The singer has a great voice, and incredibly long dreads. Great stuff.
After Shadow’s Fall came Mudvayne. I knew nothing about them and was getting hungry again so I left when they came on. They were still playing when I came back and I was intrigued by what I heard, so I will check them out some day. Interestingly enough, the lead singer was wearing a gorilla suit while on stage. Mmmmmm, OK.
Then came the standard by which all bands follow, Iron Fucking Maiden. They only played songs from the first 4 albums, which was cool with me, although hearing something from Powerslave would have been nice. The set list was Wrathchild, The Trooper, Revelations, Phantom of the Opera, Run to the Hills, # of the Beast, Hallowed be thy Name, Iron Maiden. They came the encore of Running Free and Sanctuary. Killer show. These guys know how to play a live gig, end of story. They just showed every other band how it is done.
Black Sabbath was the closer, of course. They opened with N.I.B, then After Forever, then War Pigs, Dirty Women (?), then Fairies wear Boots. We left after that since it was 9:50, we had a 90 minute drive home and I had to wake up at 4:30. I felt bad for leaving before it was all over but my body was telling me it was time to stop.

All in all it was an amazing day. 20 bands to see, some great, some good, some better off at home with the dogs. I would say that of the bands I was not familiar with I will have to check out more are Black Dahlia Murder, The Haunted and Mudvayne. I will stay away from Bury Your Dead, It Dies Today, Gizmachi, and As I Lay Dying. I didn’t get to see As I Lay Dying so maybe that is a little unfair but what I heard didn’t draw me to the stage, so, whatever. Best performance’s were Maiden, of course, Sabbath, Shadow’s Fall, Soilwork, Arch Enemy, Trivium, A Dozen Furies, and Mastodon. Killswitch was pretty good, too.

That is all for now. Can’t think or type anymore.

Damn voodoo... that was a detailed review of your adventure... thank you so much for sharing...

Iron Maiden is probably my favorite band of all time... and i've vowed to see them live (haven't yet) before my death... So, if I don't die this week, all will be well...

I also look forward to songs of the first 4 albums... and completely agree on your Powerslave comment. It is my favorite Maiden album...

Thanks again... and welcome to the forum!!!
